No. 2. Sean Clifford

Sean Clifford is a winner of spring practice because this is his job, which is not something many fans or media thought be would the case when last season ended.

Franklin talked this spring about wanting to find a no. 2 behind him, and about potentially bringing in a quarterback in the transfer portal, but mostly as depth, as they currently only have three scholarship quarterbacks on the roster.

Despite Clifford throwing for over 1,800 yards and 16 touchdowns last season, the turnover bug was an issue and led to his benching in week 4 against Nebraska.

Clifford took the nob back the following week after Levis too was benched, and was much better down the stretch of the season, a big reason for their four game winning streak to end the season.

It is worrisome that only Ta’Quan Roberson and Christian Veilleux are in that room should Clifford go down with an injury, but Penn State Football should take comfort in having a third year starter with 20 starts under his belt at the helm.

New offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich was brought to State College to be the quarterback whisperer and help the Nittany Lions become the explosive offenses he had at Oklahoma State and Texas.

For better or worse, the 2021 Penn State Football season will ride on Clifford’s shoulders.
