Having only three scholarship quarterbacks is less than ideal.

Franklin told the media this week they are still shopping the transfer market for a quarterback who can add depth and competition, which means it will most likely not be a player who comes in and challenges for a starting job.

This is shaping up to be a two horse race between Clifford, who has made 20 collegiate starts, against Roberson, who has thrown one pass in his two years on campus. Clifford was up and down and struggled with turnovers last season, but did lead the Big Ten in passing with over 1,800 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Roberson was a highly touted four-star recruit out of New Jersey, and is seen as a true pocket passed with effortless zip on his ball, which makes him a great fit for Mike Yurcich’s offense.

Franklin told the media who is hoping to have an idea of his quarterback depth chart by the end of spring, which is somewhat surprising, so this may be the position to watch for even more so when a depth chart is released.

It feels like this is Clifford’s job to lose, especially with the Nittany Lions brutal September schedule in 2021 that sees them start on the road at Wisconsin week 1 and hosts Auburn in week 3.
