 2023 Class Could Get Going

Penn State did have a 2023 commit in tight end Mathias Barnwell, but he opened his recruitment back up in January.

The 2021 class had their first commit in February of 2019, 22 months before signing day. That commit, Dont’e Thornton would eventually de-commit from Penn State. Kaden Saunders, the first 2022 commit, committed last July, 17  months before his first opportunity to sign.

With history as a good indicator, there’s the possibility that one recruit could want to shut down their recruitment early and commit.

The success rate with keeping early commits in the fold isn’t great, so although it would be nice to get  back on the board with the 2023 class, it can lead to disappointment down the road.

Penn State’s attention should rightfully stay with their fantastic 2022 class, but if an elite 2023 recruit wants in, James Franklin likely won’t talk them out of it. With all the momentum Penn State has right now, it wouldn’t be too much of a shock to see a situation like that happen.
