No. 2 Nick Lee (PSU) vs. No. 1 Jaydin Eierman (IOWA)
Eierman dec. Lee, 6-5
Lee kicked things off with an early takedown in the 1st period to take the lead (2-0). Eiermen then earned the escape (2-1) after Lee couldn’t build up much riding time from his takedown.
Shortly later, Eierman cut the corner on a shot from Lee and snagged a takedown of his own to take the lead (2-3). He then showed why he’s such a strong wrestler on top as he rode Lee out for the remainder of the 1st period, building up close to 2 minutes of riding time in the process.
Nick started the 2nd on top as he tried to cut into Eierman’s huge riding time. Eventually Eierman escaped Lee’s grasp (2-4) and both wrestlers finished out the 2nd period squared up with Lee looking to get his opponent back to the mat.
Both grapplers started the 3rd period in the neutral position and Lee finally landed a single leg and slammed Eierman to the mat to tie up the score (4-4). Based on the time left in the match and Eierman’s huge riding time lead, Lee had to give up the escape (4-5) to try to get another takedown.
Unfortunately Eierman was not interesting in wrestling a single second of the 3rd period so there was no way Lee could do anything. Eierman got slapped with his second stall warning late in the 3rd (5-5) but it didn’t matter as he ran around for the final 20 seconds and claim the 6-5 decision over Lee.
In his post game interview, Eierman said “My game plan is just wrestling.” I wish he would have just been truthful and said “My game plan is to get a lead and then run around the mat for 3 minutes.”
Whatever.
One of these years Lee will win his 1st B1G title but sadly it won’t be this year.
