Meh candidates …

Cleveland State Head Coach Dennis Gates (Cleveland State Head Coach)

Gates is a two-time Horizon League Coach of the Year, and led Cleveland State to their best Horizon League start in history this year. This type of hire follows the Penn State mold of hiring a high achieving mid-major coach (Pat Chambers from Boston University, Ed DeChellis from East Tennesse State, etc.)

Why “meh”?: Gates has no experience head coaching at a Power 5 conference, and isn’t a name that will turn the heads of many upper echelon recruits.

Micah Shrewsberry (Purdue Assistant Coach)

Shrewsberry has been coaching for over 20 years; he was an assistant at Purdue before spending six years with the Boston Celtics, reuniting him with Brad Stevens, whom he worked with back at Butler.  He rejoined Matt Painter at Purdue this year.

Why “meh”: Shrewsberry hasn’t had a head coaching position yet anywhere.

Saddi Washington (Michigan Assistant Coach)

Washington started as an assistant at Oakland and then was hired at Michigan in 2016 under the aforementioned John Beilein. He was retained by Juwan Howard in 2019.  Washington is apparently Michigan’s “top recruiter,” and is currently involved with the recruitment of two five-star and two four-star Michigan based recruits. Could he bring them to Happy Valley?

Why “meh”: it’s another non-flashy name without any head coaching experience
