Offensive Line

Grade: B

The offensive line had an up and down campaign, but after some mid season lineup tweaks really showed their talent and potential during the four game win streak.

In week 4 at Nebraska, Penn State football inserted redshirt freshman Caedan Wallace into the starting lineup at right tackle, kicking senior Will Fries into right guard. The move seemed to pay off, as the former four star recruit is a better pass blocker then Fries and held down the position for the remaining five games.

Another pleasant surprise was redshirt sophomore Juice Scruggs who was battling back from injury, who might have found a permanent home at left guard. Scruggs is a great athlete and at has finishing power in the running game. Two plays stood out against Illinois, a pancake block on Levi’s’ touchdown run and a crucial down field block on a screen pass to Dotson that went for a 70 yard touchdown.

The good for this offensive line this season was the Nittany Lions ranked fifth in the Big Ten in rushing , averaging just over 174 yards a game on the ground. The bad was that Sean Clifford was sacked more then any other quarterback in the conference.

During the winning streak, the line looked dominate in a few games, especially in wins at Rutgers and Michigan. Their ability to blow the opposing defensive line off the ball, opening up running lanes while keeping Clifford upright was a big reason for how improved the offense looked late in the season.
