Penn State football looks to continue their dominance against Maryland

Looking Back

Penn State and Maryland played each other for the first time over 100 years ago, as they met up on November 17, 1917 in University Park, PA. Penn State dominated in that game, the same way they have ever since, beating Maryland by the score of 57-0, setting up a run of seven straight victories.

During that seven-game win streak, Penn State shutout Maryland four times, and allowed only 42 points combined. Maryland got their first victory against the Nittany Lions on November 4, 1961, a 21-17 victory in College Park, Maryland, and it would take 53 years for Maryland to come out on top in this rivalry, their last win coming in 2014.

In 1989, the two teams played to a 13-13 tie, putting Penn State’s record against the Terrapins at a clean 40-2-1. Up until the Maryland win in 2014, Penn State had shut them out six times, held them to seven-or-less points on 14 occasions, and in most of the matchups, the game was not really close.

After the win in 2014, Penn State has been even more dominant, and the hope is that continues on Saturday.
