Penn State football quarterback Sean Clifford won’t dive too deep into discussing this week’s matchup against Pittsburgh.

This weekend, Penn State football kicks off the final edition of the Nittany Lions versus the Pittsburgh Panthers for a while. To the fans of each program, it’s a rivalry week filled with much trash talking and high expectations from both squads.

To the players, though, it’s just another opportunity for the competitors to take the field and try to beat their opponent. Well, that’s what it is for Penn State at least. We already know some Pittsburgh players are anticipating this battle as it is considered an in-state rivalry.

Recently, Pennsylvania native Jimmy Morrissey ignited the battle with some interesting quotes following Pittsburgh’s latest matchup against Ohio. As Morrissey mentioned he’s not too fond of the Nittany Lions, many within Happy Valley took notice.

Perhaps, Morrissey’s post-game quotes regarding Penn State forced Pittsburgh’s head coach Pat Narduzzi to ‘shield’ all reporters away from his players leading up to Saturday’s game in an attempt to keep the interest on the field for Saturday, rather than what players said off of it leading up to the actual game day.

Penn State’s head coach James Franklin hasn’t taken the same approach as Narduzzi, and it looks like he won’t really have to. When discussing the upcoming matchup with Penn State quarterback Sean Clifford, Pitt reporter Jerry DiPaola didn’t get much out of the quarterback.

Clifford keeps his quotes short and sweet

“What does playing Pitt mean to Penn State?” DiPaola asked. “You are probably expecting this answer,” Clifford responded. “Each week we have to go 1-0. That’s the only goal in mind.” Then, Penn State linebacker Jan Johnson chimed in with an answer of his own.

“Just means another opportunity to go out in Beaver Stadium and get a W.” Clearly, the Nittany Lions opted to keep away from issuing any bulletin board material for the Pitt Panthers. After all, keeping a perfect record is the number one agenda for the Lions, not adding fuel to a rivalry.
