Penn State Football: 30 greatest players of all-time
By Brad Weiss
During the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Penn State Nittany Lions had arguably the best offensive line in all of college football. One of the leaders on that offensive line was Mike Munchak, who would miss the 1980 college football season with a knee injury, but would rebound in 1981. He would end up being a first round selection in the 1982 NFL Draft by the Houston Oilers at No. 8 overall.
Munchak played his high school football at Central (PA) High School in Scranton, so it made sense that he would play his college ball in Happy Valley. At Penn State, Munchak earned Second-Team All-American honors as a senior, helping the team to a 10-2 record in his final season on campus. He led the offensive line that would beat USC in the 1982 Fiesta Bowl.
After his run at Penn State came to an end, Munchak would spend the next 32 years with the Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans organization. In fact, Munchak would eventually be named the Titans head coach, a post he held between 2011-13. In 2014, when the Penn State head coaching job opened up, he was a finalist for the position, which eventually went to James Franklin.
Munchak had an incredible NFL career, making it to nine Pro Bowls, and saw his No. 63 retired by the Titans organization. A member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Munchak is regarded as arguably the best offensive lineman to ever put on the Penn State uniform, and there is no way you can do a top-30 greatest players in school history without having No. 78 on the list.
