Penn State tight ends coach/passing game coordinator Ricky Rahne

We will start with the obvious option. From the second Joe Moorhead got to Penn State in December of 2015, James Franklin tabbed Ricky Rahne as almost an apprentice to Moorhead. The idea behind it being that Rahne would be prepared to be a potential successor to Moorhead one day.

Well, that day is here.

Ricky Rahne is a very bright offensive mind and a future offensive coordinator. James Franklin has said as much in the past. The biggest question now is rather or not Franklin believes Rahne is ready to be the offensive coordinator at Penn State.

There is zero doubt that Ricky Rahne will get an interview and have an excellent chance of getting the job. Hiring from within would minimize the changes with the offense moving forward and make the transition as seamless as possible.

Right now, I would tab Rahne as the early favorite for the job.

Outside of the 2016 TaxSlayer Bowl, Ricky Rahne has never called plays before. This is a very overlooked, yet vitally important, trait of a good offensive coordinator. The lack of play calling experience would be my biggest concern with Rahne. However, if Coach Franklin believes Rahne is ready, then Ricky would be my guy.
