Penn State’s season opener at West Virginia confirmed for noon kickoff on Fox

Last year's season opener against West Virginia was a primetime Penn State victory on NBC's Saturday Night, but this season the Nittany Lions will open play with a noon kickoff.

Earlier in the spring NBC released the schedule for its first two Big Ten Saturday Night games, featuring Michigan’s season opener against Fresno State and Nebraska’s matchup with Colorado and Coach Prime in Week 2. Notably, Penn State’s highly anticipated showdown with West Virginia, a team that won nine games last season, was left off the slate.

Well, after Brett McMurphy’s report, Penn State fans can prepare for an early start with a noon kickoff in Morgantown Week 1. After last season’s game between the Nittany Lions and Mountaineers was a primetime affair at Beaver Stadium on NBC, Fox will broadcast the 2024 season opener.

Last season, in Drew Allar’s debut, the sophomore quarterback went 21/29 for 325 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. It was arguably his best game of the season and still stands as his career-high in passing yards. Penn State beat West Virginia 38-15.

This year, West Virginia looks much stronger. The Mountaineers have Garrett Greene returning at quarterback and after a 4-3 start to the 2023 season, Neal Brown’s team went 5-1 including a Duke’s Mayo Bowl win over North Carolina.

Penn State has played West Virginia 60 times and leads the all-time series 49-9-2. The first matchup came all the way back in 1904, a Penn State victory.
