Back well before Joe Paterno took over the program, Rip Engle was leading Penn State football and in 1957, for the first time, his program met the Vanderbilt Commodores. The SEC opponent dropped Penn State to 2-2 on the season with a 32-20 Vandy win.
Following that loss, Penn State won four straight before ending the season on a low note with a 14-13 loss to Pitt. The 1957 Nittany Lions were led by quarterback Al Jacks, who finished the year with 673 passing yards on 53 completions, and Dave Kasperian who led the team with 469 rushing yards and eight touchdowns.
