Clemson
Coming off the 1986 national championship season, Penn State went 8-3 in the 1987 regular season to earn a bid to the Citrus Bowl against the Clemson Tigers. The year was already a letdown, but the bowl game bid two teams with three combined national titles in the decade against each other, providing some anticipation.
The Tigers ran away with it to finish 10-2 on the year with a 35-10 win over Joe Paterno’s Nittany Lions. The 8-4 finish was a precursor to a disastrous 5-6 year in 1988.
