On Thursday, EA Sports released its team rankings for College Football 25 which only stoked the fire of fans desperate to play a college football video game for the first time since 2014. This will also be the first time that the game features real player’s names and likenesses which made it a shock that Penn State was one of the top-rated offensive teams in the game.

In 2023, Drew Allar protected the football well, but Penn State lacked explosives on offense in both the passing and running games. Nick Singleton had an uninspiring season, the wide receivers disappeared and offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich was fired. In the offseason, KeAndre Lambert-Smith, Dante Cephas, and other receivers transferred away, Theo Johnson, Olu Fashanu, Caedan Wallace, and Hunter Nourzad all left for the NFL, yet EA Sports is optimistic about the new-look unit.

Allar is back, with new OC Andy Kotelnicki bringing an innovative system from Kansas. James Franklin added Julian Fleming from Ohio State through the portal and that was enough to warrant the 12th-best offensive rating in the game.

The Nittany Lions finished 2023 ranked 55th in total offense, 73rd in yards per play, and scored just 12 and 15 points in losses to Ohio State and Michigan. Penn State will need to be much improved on that side of the ball to make the College Football Playoff and as the ninth overall team in the game, EA Sports certainly thinks it will.

However EA seems to think that Coach Prime has the 16th best team in the nation out in Boulder, so maybe we shouldn't just take their word for it on this one.
