2024 Week 0 12-team College Football Playoff rankings prediction
By Josh Yourish
No Big Ten teams got their season underway in Week 0, but there was significant movement at the top of the ACC. No. 10 Florida State, the ACC favorite coming into the season was upset 24-21 by Georgia Tech over in Dublin, Ireland. After getting left out of last season’s four-team College Football Playoff despite an undefeated regular season and ACC title, the Seminoles will have to fight their way back into the 12-team CFP picture with a conference loss weighing them down all season long.
On the flip side, Georgia Tech suddenly becomes a threat to the rest of the conference and a dark horse team to make a CFP run. The Yellow Jackets have a brutal schedule that features matchups with No. 7 Notre Dame, No. 19 Miami, No. 24 North Carolina State, and No. 1 Georgia, but that presents the opportunity to score another marquee victory to pad the resume.
Many people are already scrapping their preseason CFP predictions with the FSU loss, but those of us who didn’t believe in the Noles from the start, don’t have to change a thing after Week 0.
Rank | Team | Bid | Previous Rank |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Georgia | SEC Champion | N/A |
2 | Ohio State | Big Ten Champion | N/A |
3 | Kansas State | Big 12 Champion | N/A |
4 | Miami (FL) | ACC Champion | N/A |
5 | Oregon | At-large | N/A |
6 | Alabama | At-large | N/A |
7 | Ole Miss | At-large | N/A |
8 | Notre Dame | At-large | N/A |
9 | Texas | At-large | N/A |
10 | Penn State | At-large | N/A |
11 | Virginia Tech | At-large | N/A |
12 | Memphis | AAC Champion | N/A |
Starting the year at No. 8 in the country, Penn State is in a similar spot to FSU, though kicking off the season with a feisty non-conference opponent.
Even after falling to GT, the Noles are still alive to make a CFP run and a loss to West Virginia wouldn’t eliminate Penn State either. However, James Franklin does not want to start the season with a high-profile rivalry loss because the path to the Big Ten title is much tougher than FSU’s route to ACC supremacy.
Week 0 gave us just four games, but still provided plenty of CFP fodder. Now, with a full slate of action in Week 1 of the college football season, the CFP predictions will see a lot of change by this time next week.
