10 greatest quarterbacks in Penn State Nittany Lions history
By Josh Yourish
Penn State football is heading into the 2024 season expecting a lot from former five-star Drew Allar, but just because he’s one of the highest-ranked recruits to ever head to Happy Valley doesn’t mean he’ll be an all-time great Nittany Lion. Even with great numbers, Allar will need to do a lot of winning as a junior and possibly a senior because there have been other five-stars who didn’t turn in outstanding careers.
The Nittany Lions, of course, are known for their running backs and linebackers, but Penn State has also had its share of excellent quarterbacks with two consensus All-Americans at the position, and three first-round NFL draft picks.
Joe Paterno’s last great seasons came with Daryll Clark at quarterback in 2008 and 2009. Over those 26 games, Clark won 22 and nearly led the Nittany Lions to their second Rose Bowl win in 2008 when they took a share of the Big Ten title.
Clark finished his career with 5,742 passing yards, now seventh all-time in Penn State history, and averaged 7.8 yards per attempt with 43 touchdowns to 16 interceptions. In 2009, Clark led the Big Ten with 24 passing touchdowns.
