Penn State is through the first chunk of its Big Ten slate, and it did not go well. Heading into Week 9, first-year head coach Matt Campbell is still searching for his first conference victory with the Nittany Lions at 3-4 (0-4).

The slim College Football Playoff hopes that existed for Penn State were largely tied to a belief that the soft schedule would open a path to the Big Ten Championship Game. That ship has sailed, even as the rest of the Big Ten has largely underwhelmed to this point. However, the fact remains that Penn State has a favorable draw down the stretch.

That begins with Purdue coming off a bye in Week 9 before a trip to Washington, hosting Minnesota and Rutgers, and visiting Maryland. The path to bowl eligibility is at least still clear for the Nittany Lions, but it gets considerably more difficult to see if they fall to the Boilermakers on Saturday.

Week 9 could be Penn State’s chance to turn the tide of the season and close strong down the stretch. Or it could complete the spiral and bring an early offseason filled with questions about the direction of the program under Campbell that won’t be easy to answer. No pressure.
