Defensive end Max Granville was one of the more highly-anticipated Penn State football players to watch in 2026 after he redshirted his true freshman season and missed all of 2025 due to injury. He hit a barrier early on this season already.
During Saturday's contest vs. Marshall, quarterback Carlos Del Rio-Wilson completed a pass to wide receiver Owen Sweeney. Granville was in the area, wrapped his arms around Sweeney, and took him to the ground. Granville had his back on the ground after the tackle was made and stayed on the field for a bit longer.
Granville didn't seem to be in any severe pain, but the Nittany Lions' trainers came out on the field and the team called an injury timeout. He eventually got up and walked to the sideline under his own power with the staff by his side.

Before the 2025 season, Granville sustained a season-ending knee injury in the spring. He watched Penn State go through a devastating season, stuck around in Happy Valley, and has impressed the new coaching staff over the offseason.
“[He] is somebody we were super excited about when we stepped in here,” director of football strength and conditioning Reid Kagy said earlier in the summer. “I know [Granville] was coming back from injury as well when we first got here, and [this is] the biggest thing about [him]: [Granville] is super humble, and [he] goes to work . . . We're excited for what he's gonna do this fall."
Per Tyler Donohue of Lions247, Granville has returned to the game. Del Rio-Wilson tried one last pass attempt in the first half, targeting tight end Toby Payne on his way into the end zone. The Thundering Herd quarterback had to swivel out of Granville's way in order to make the pass and didn't have much time to get the ball out after that either. The pass ultimately went incomplete.
