Penn State's WR room just got worse, if that's even possible

There might be no wideouts left for the Nittany Lions to bank on in their recruitment classes.

Penn State football's wide receiver room is not its strong suit. In attempts to turn that around, the three transfers, Kyron Hudson, Devonte Ross, and Trebor Pena, were supposed to build a foundation in 2025 that younger players and recruits can build off of. Not only is the production on the field lacking, but the Nittany Lions don't have any wideouts coming in from the class of 2026.

Penn State's class of 2026 4-stars are clearing out and the WR room just took a hit

Following the firing of head coach James Franklin, commits from the classes of 2026 and 2027 reopened their recruitment instantly. Of this first batch of de-commitments, wide receivers Jahsiear Rogers and Davion Brown were included.

Brown is a four-star recruit from Virginia. According to 247Sports Composite rankings, he is ranked 173rd overall and 25th out of wide receivers from the class of 2026. He is also the No. 6 recruit out of his state.

He committed to Penn State on May 12. Rivals announced his de-commitment on Monday via social media.

“Penn State has a system I can see myself being a offensive weapon in and being able to make an impact in different spots on the field," Brown said to Rivals' Chad Simmons previously. "The coaching staff are good people who wants the best for you there."

He also told 247Sports' Brian Dohn that Happy Valley felt like the place to be and that it wasn't a last minute decision. Brown said that Penn State felt like home. Now it looks like home is somewhere else for the wideout.

Following Franklin's departure, Brown said on social media that he is now exploring all of his options moving forward. When he initially made his commitment, Georgia, Michigan, Duke, and Syracuse were all schools he set aside for the Nittany Lions.

Penn State took a major hit in recruitment after firing Franklin. Four-star prospects backed away from their commitment in pursuit of a stable, elite program rather than gambling on a question mark with the Nittany Lions. If Penn State turns around with a suitable head coach, some recruits might filter back in, but the candidate pool does not look realistically promising enough to reel elite prospects back in.
