Penn State football has yet to designate all of its home game themes for the 2026 season excluding Homecoming Weekend, which is slated for Week 4 versus Wisconsin.
There aren't too many exciting home matchups to go around, thanks to a pretty light Big Ten schedule new head coach Matt Campbell was gifted with in Year 1. So, allocating the rest of the themes should be quite easy.
Aside from Homecoming, the White Out and Stripe Out themes are the biggest ones left to designate. In 2025, the blue and white went all-in on the White Out, designating it to a Big Ten Championship rematch with Oregon in Week 5.
The White Out is one of the most, if not the most, disruptive environments in college football. Though the game against the Ducks didn't fall in favor of the Nittany Lions, it was still a riveting, intense atmosphere and it was still a turning point in the season for Penn State as it failed to bounce back from such a disheartening, deflating loss.
No matter how the 2025 season went, the White Out should still be a huge game for the Nittany Lions. The crowd and energy can help drive a game, and there's no better way to get Campbell rolling in the season than with his first White Out win under his belt.
Thanks to such an easy Big Ten schedule, there should be no questions as to which opponent faces the intimidating fanbase at Beaver Stadium.
Penn State's 2026 home opponents (Big Ten only):
- Week 4 - Wisconsin (Homecoming)
- Week 6 - USC
- Week 9 - Purdue
- Week 11 - Minnesota
- Week 12 - Rutgers (Senior Day)
A White Out in Week 6 vs. USC is the perfect environment for Matt Campbell to tally a decisive win
There aren't too many options to go around as Homecoming has already been designated and the last home game will, of course, be Senior Day for the graduating Nittany Lions.
That leaves USC, Purdue, and Minnesota as the remaining games without a theme. It goes without saying that the Trojans are the obvious choice for the White Out.
Only three teams Penn State has scheduled have been featured in "Way-Too-Early Top 25" rankings: Michigan, USC, and Washington. The Nittany Lions face both the Wolverines and Huskies on the road. If Michigan was a home game, that would've been the no-brainer White Out opponent, but a Trojans White Out game can mean something significant for Campbell.
Week 6 is right before Penn State takes on the Wolverines, which is considered the biggest game for Campbell in 2026. On top of them being the toughest opponent on the schedule, they also designated Week 7 as their Homecoming game, meaning the Nittany Lions will be on the road in an elevated hostile environment.
There's no better way to prepare for that atmosphere than playing in one at home the week prior.
It won't be exactly the same, obviously, considering Beaver Stadium will be in favor of Penn State. However, having experience playing in the midst of that chaos can be critical.
In addition to preparing for Week 7, a win against a potential Top 25 team right before is a great bonus. Knowing Michigan is next on the schedule and having fans decked out and riled up for the White Out is the perfect amount of fuel for Campbell to prove he was the right guy for the Nittany Lion head coach job. Tacking on a crucial win for the season in front of a stadium that packed and active is a great look for him and it can act as a propeller to continue pushing through the season on a high note.
Allocating the White Out to Purdue or Minnesota feels more like a waste. There's more on the line for Campbell in Week 6 vs. USC, and one of the most elite environments in college football deserves that kind of game. The Nittany Lions shouldn't take the easy route on this one.
