Penn State QB recruiting update makes Matt Campbell’s intentions clear

It's Will Wood or bust for Penn State in the 2027 class.

Even the most diehard Nittany Lions fans would be forgiven for their confusion surrounding Penn State’s quarterback recruiting plans. Just when Penn State was giving all appearances of cooling on four-star Peter Bourque ahead of his Thursday commitment date, Rivals recruiting reporter Adam Gorney predicted Matt Campbell to land him over Virginia Tech and Georgia.

Then, Gorney quickly walked back his unexpected prediction and named three-star QB Will Wood as the player to watch for the Nittany Lions. That’s been the growing expectation since Penn State offered Wood in April, and now, Steve Wiltfong’s prediction for On3 has clarified their intentions.

Will Wood is Penn State’s QB priority in the 2027 class

Wood is the 29th-ranked QB in the country by 247Sports Composite, but Penn State’s interest in the Westwood, Massachusetts product could have him skyrocketing up industry rankings heading into his final high school season.

Bill O’Brien and Boston College are positioned as Penn State’s top competition for Wood, but Campbell and his staff have put on the full-court press to land him as they’ve faded in the race for Bourque. Penn State’s interest didn’t need to be confirmed, but Wiltfong’s prediction, along with a crystal ball from Brian Dohn, 247Sports’ national recruit analyst, on Wednesday morning, confirms that their interest is being reciprocated.

Penn State quarterback coach Jake Waters and offensive coordinator Taylor Mouser led a contingent of coaches for an at-home visit on Friday. Wood has official visits scheduled for Wake Forest, Boston College, West Virginia, and Arkansas. With the momentum building, he may be committed to the Nittany Lions before he ever makes those trips.

He’s a bit undersized at 6-foot-2, but he has the frame to handle Big Ten football at 220 pounds. Wood is a big-armed pocket-passer with great touch downfield, advanced ball placement, and a keen understanding of how to layer the ball over the middle of the field and throw to space. He’s mobile enough to evade pressure and can burn the defense as a scrambler or on designed runs, but tends to keep his eyes downfield, hunting a big play with his arm, and he’s capable of generating enough horsepower off-platform to cash those checks.

The big question is whether or not Wood has the arm to drive the ball into tight windows and outside the numbers. Like Brock Purdy and Rocco Becht, he'll need to throw with great anticipation to make up for the deficiency.

The recruiting rankings may not reflect it yet, but Wood has the skillset to grow into a high-level Power 4 starter. With a bit of a thin QB room heading into 2026, Penn State may need him to hit that ceiling.

Matt Campbell needs a clear QB of the future in Happy Valley

Iowa State transfer Alex Manske will likely be Rocco Becht’s backup this season as a redshirt freshman. The 2025 three-star is also seemingly slotted as the heir apparent to Becht, who is in his final year of eligibility. Connor Barry, a DIII transfer in his final year of eligibility, may also make a push for QB2, but isn’t a long-term factor for the program.

Beyond Manske are 2026 four-star Peyton Falzone, a former James Franklin recruit who committed to the Nittany Lions before Campbell was hired, and three-star Kase Evans, who de-committed from Iowa State to follow Campbell to Penn State. Falzone is the most highly touted by the recruiting industry, but, as evidenced by the fact that Campbell prioritized Wood over Bourque, that doesn’t mean much to him or his staff.

If he does join Campbell’s first full recruiting class at Penn State, Wood may jump to the front of the line ahead of Falzone and Evans.
