Penn State football 2028 quarterback commit James Armstrong is all-in with the Nittany Lions, which has been a point of emphasis he's made since committing July 2. Now, as the face of their 2028 class, Armstrong is on a mission to help build the roster.
He's spoken before about valuing in-state recruits, like himself. That's already something that head coach Matt Campbell needs to reinstate in Penn State's recruiting strategies, so having a quarterback from Pennsylvania urging others from the state to come to Happy Valley is a huge advantage in this cycle.
Blue-chip talent is critical, but getting more recrutis who have similar mindsets to Armstrong is Campbell's ideal world.
Armstrong has previously discussed with reporters how NIL plays a factor in his recruitment. He said that it doesn't matter what offers get thrown out there between now and the time he enrolls. De-centering NIL has become less common each cycle that passes by, and for a school like Penn State that has emphasized relationships and culture over money, it's easier to miss our on highly-touted prospects regardless of how great the program's staff and culture is.
Landing a guy like Armstrong was a massive win, and can yield more benefits as this 2028 cycle continues.

"I just like people to be selfless . . . We're all going to get paid, we're all good players, but the goal is really just to win a national championship," Armstrong told Zach Seyko on Locked On Nittany Lions when asked what kinds of personalities he wants to play with.
Armstrong continued, saying that everyone is a part of each others' journeys and it's never about one player. In the NIL era, players inevitably chase money, but Armstrong wants a team full of those who chase wins.
That's a mindset Campbell needs leading his team on the field in the future. The ultimate goal for Penn State is a national title in this new chapter with Campbell. The external distractions can't have a place in his players' minds. It should be about the team, the bonds, and the main goal.
Off-field chemistry is also just as important as on-field. Armstrong added that he wants his teammates to be friends with each other. Selflessness and coming together as a unit rather than as individual players on individual journeys is what he wants out of his future Nittany Lions.
Armstrong embodies the culture Campbell's installing at Penn State. As of now, he's the perfect quarterback for the Nittany Lions in regards to personality, mindset, and values. The talent on the field will continue developing over his next two high school seasons and will hopefully translate well over to the field at Beaver Stadium come the 2028 season.
