As Penn State gears up to face off with Northwestern, it made a special announcement to fit the theme of Week 7's game. The university's homecoming weekend is on the horizon. To celebrate, the Nittany Lions return an iconic uniform back onto the field.
Penn State Athletics released a video on Twitter/X announcing the details of the throwback uniforms. The jerseys, which will still have the white outline on the arm sleeves, feature a small blue Nittany Lion stamped on the front of the team's trademark white collar. Instead of the modern mascot logo, though, the classic Lion Shrine logo will take its place.
The Nittany Lions will don this special look with pride for the program and all the players who came before them.
Penn State goes back to the past with "Generation of Greatness" uniforms for homecoming
This is one of the most famous Penn State jerseys there is and also one of the most prestigious.
“The jersey became a real staple through the whole — all ’80s, all ’90s, all 2000s, really,” the promotional video said. “That’s really a recognizable three decades of Penn State football. People are really going to enjoy seeing it again.”

The Nittany Lions last wore their "Generation of Greatness" uniform combination in two games during the 2024 campaign, both during White Out contests. Penn State secured victories in both games, beating Illinois, 21-7, in Week 5 and SMU, 38-10, in the College Football Playoff. The first round of the CFP was the first time the Nittany Lions scheduled a postseason White Out as well.
The white-collar community helped Penn State's jerseys become some of the most recognizable in the country during the very late 1900s and early 2000s. Players like LaVar Arrington, Ki-Jana Carter, and Kerry Collins rocked the legendary jersey throughout their careers. It was a uniform worn by greats.
It will also be the Stripe Out game for fans in the stands. If attending the game, fans should coordinate their colors with the section they sit in. A stripe pattern will wash over Beaver Stadium, alternating between blue and white. This is a classic theme associated with homecoming to add to the school pride and spirit surrounding campus.
Kickoff against the Wildcats is slated for 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, Oct. 11. Fans can also enjoy the university's annual Homecoming Parade throughout campus and downtown State College on Friday night.
