Penn State football has a packed official visit weekend ongoing, but that doesn't mean the Nittany Lions haven't looked at what their Class of 2028 could look like.
There are a few areas head coach Matt Campbell needs to hit with this upcoming recruitment cycle, including the state of Pennsylvania as a whole. Looking specifically at position groups, though, Campbell needs to land a good quarterback. He whiffed on a few in this current cycle, ultimately landing and practically securing three-star Will Wood.
Senior Rocco Becht is on his way out after the 2026 season. Since redshirt freshman and Iowa State transfer Alex Manske hasn't had much time repping the blue and white due to injury recovery during the spring, it's uncertain if he will be the starter Campbell needs him to be in 2027 and beyond.
Behind Manske and excluding Wood, Penn State has former Class of 2026 four-star Peyton Falzone, former Class of 2026 three-star Kase Evans, and walk-on redshirt junior Jack Lambert. In other words, there's a lot of unproven talent in the quarterback room. Campbell's development skills at that position need to shine through, but he also needs to start scouting out Class of 2028 prospects and getting ahead in their recruitment.
Earlier in the week, the Nittany Lions hosted three-star quarterback Drew Sheridan from Dearborn, Mich. He's ranked as the No. 403 overall recruit and No. 33 quarterback in the class, per 247Sports Composite rankings. Rivals Industry Rankings lists Sheridan at No. 405 nationally.

Penn State hosts Class of 2028, three-star quarterback Drew Sheridan on an unofficial visit
Campbell might already have his eyes set on Sheridan, but he won't be the only quarterback Penn State targets.
Michigan State is pursuing the Dearborn native hard, taking advantage of the in-state opportunity present. The Spartans have hosted him a whopping 11 times already with Sheridan's first visit dating back to April 11, 2023.
He'ss also taken unofficial visits to Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan, and Western Michigan, not to mention the other schools not at his convenience.
As a sophomore in 2025-26, Sheridan finished with a 71.8 completion percentage. He completed 51-of-71 attempts for 789 yards and nine passing touchdowns. He added 16 carries for 66 yards and one touchdown on the ground as well.
Campbell's other options are four-stars Christopher Vargas and Lukas Prock, and three-stars James Armstrong and Trey Tagliaferri. Armstrong is the only Pennsylvania native, but the Nittany Lions have done well with surrounding states on the East Coast, like New Jersey. Prock and Tagliaferri are both from there and Vargas is from Massachusetts.
With Sheridan being the farthest from Penn State, he might not be the most likely recruit to commit especially with Michigan programs targeting him hard. However, if Campbell can get two quarterbacks in this class, he can't sit back and let Sheridan out of his sights this early in his recruitment.
