As 2027 recruitment continues buzzing around Happy Valley, Penn State football has garnered interest from a few 2028 prospects from camps and workouts throughout June.
On Saturday, the Nittany Lions added another commit to their Class of 2028 after hosting a New York kicker for a workout that afternoon. Special teams coordinator Justin Lustig offered Carter Petri earlier in the week on June 17 and Petri officially committed over the weekend.

Class of 2028 kicker Carter Petri commits to Penn State
Petri is a 4.5-star recruit, per Kohl's Professional Camps, and is ranked No. 9 among kickers in the country.
"At the 2026 Kohl's Eastern Spring Showcase, Carter Petri demonstrated his hard work with impressive results, scoring 12 total points in field goals. During kickoff charting, he earned 109.6 points, achieving a top kickoff of 74 yards and a hang time of 3.6 seconds," Kohl's Comments read. "He has huge upside and was one of the top prospects at camp, his ball striking is Elite, and he had a wonderful showing at camp . . . This consistency underscores his technical skills and composure under pressure, traits that coaches at the next level should value."
At the Eastern Spring Showcase, Petri ranked fourth among kickers and was the highest-ranked from his class with a 109.60 average top two Big Ball scores.
In 2025, Petri made two of four field goal attempts and was perfect on extra point attempts (26). He also put up 2,356 yards on 41 kickoffs as a sophomore at St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute. On 26 punts, he logged 871 yards, including a 52-yard personal record that season. Nine of his punts landed inside the 20-yard-line, according to Petri's MaxPreps stats.
Throughout his recruitment and series of visits, Lustig has grown his relationship with the 2028 kicker.
"Great kid and a great person and probably the best ball striker in the class of 2028," Hammer Kicking Academy's Adam Tanalski told Lions247. "He's been to Penn State three times, has an unbelievable relationship with (assistant special teams coach Matt) Colangelo and Lustig."
Petri attended Penn State's junior day back in January and also took an unofficial visit to campus for a spring practice. He also saw the 2025 Nittany Lions in action for their game against Northwestern in October. Tanalski also noted that Petri has worked out with former Penn State long snapper Tyler Duzansky and has a good understanding of the program from a coach and player perspective.
Penn State's class now holds two commits and is ranked fourth in the nation overall. Four-star cornerback Deonte Flemings Jr. was the first recruit who pledged to the Nittany Lions, doing so late in January.
