Penn State women's basketball officially has its new head coach. Tanisha Wright's introductory press conference was held on Monday, March 23.

Penn State basketball already loses first young talent to the Transfer Portal

Wright is a former Nittany Lion herself, having played for the squad from 2001-05 in an era that saw the blue and white as serious title contenders. She earned the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year award three times over her collegiate career and was an All-American.

“She was part of an era defined by excellence,” athletic director Pat Kraft said, introducing Wright to the media. “Big Ten championships, NCAA Tournament runs, national recognition, and a reputation for toughness that became Lady Lions basketball. She didn’t just play here. She helped define what winning looks like as a Penn State Lady Lion, and now goes back to start the next chapter.”

Kraft also emphasized Wright's resume. Having the Penn State connection and history with the program is only a plus on top of her experience coaching in the WNBA. He values her commitment to the game, her players, and the Nittany Lion program,

"It’s more important for who she is, her passion for mentorship, her belief in building strong women, not just strong players, her commitment to excellence in the classroom, in the community, and in the quiet moments when nobody is watching.”

Wright also expressed her gratitude for Penn State and having the opportunity to come back to her alma mater as a head coach. She said she's dedicated to her players, making sure to have a positive impact on everyone that is out on her court as people just as much as players.

“Penn State is home to anybody who has ever played here,” Wright said, as reported by Onward State's Michael Zeno. “My teammates can tell you, this place always holds a special place in our hearts. This place will always be home to anybody who has been in the Penn State environment and really engulfed themselves in it, and so just like that, everybody here has been happy to see me and a lot of energy around it.”
