Official visit season is upon us, and while Penn State football didn't have anything lined up from May 29-31, updates on Class of 2027 targets and commits still impacted its recruitment outlook.

Over the weekend, Virginia came up as a threat for the Nittany Lions with a three-star defensive back.

Semajay Robinson was the first commitment head coach Matt Campbell picked up in this cycle. He made his decision on March 28 after taking an unofficial visit that same day. Campbell re-offered Robinson a scholarship on Jan. 27.

Since his commitment, Robinson's loyalty hasn't truly been tested, though he scheduled official visits with other programs. After the first week of OV season, that all changed.

According to Jacquie Franciulli of 247Sports, Robinson stated that the Cavaliers surprised him over the weekend.

Robinson has two other official visits lined up, including his trip to Happy Valley. According to Rivals, he is also set to visit Mississippi State. He'll be at Penn State June 5-7 and in Starkville June 12-14.

Virginia threatens Penn State as flip contender for three-star defensive back Semajay Robinson

Robinson is the No. 504 recruit nationally in his class and No. 51 cornerback. He's ranked 42nd among recruits from Florida, per 247Sports Composite rankings. Rivals Industry Rankings lists him at No. 555, No. 58, and No. 46, respectively.

While associate head coach and cornerbacks coach Terry Smith has been a huge bonus in recruitment for the Nittany Lions, his success rate might also fight back against him. Penn State has four cornerbacks committed and Robinson is the lowest ranked recruit out of them. The position room is headlined by four-star Kei'Shjuan Telfair.

As for Virginia, its recruitment class is in need of a boost. Unlike the Nittany Lions, the Cavaliers have zero Class of 2027 cornerbacks. In their current class of five commits, Robinson would be the highest ranked recruit nationally by a few hundred spots.

Smith was a major contributing factor into Robinson's commitment. At the time, the Class of 2027 recruit told Blue White Illustrated that Smith's coaching and development was important in his decision. He added that players, like Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr., are guys he models his game after and being part of a program like Penn State matters.

The people matter, but so does time on the field. That's the one thing Virginia can offer in comparison to the Nittany Lions. Competition in the cornerback room is much stronger than what the Cavaliers have to offer.

Regaining Robinson's commitment after he backed out when James Franklin was fired was huge for Campbell. He beat out Franklin, who offered the prospect a scholarship at Virginia Tech, and kickstarted his Class of 2027 with Robinson. So, despite having three other cornerbacks, all who are ranked higher than him, keeping Robinson committed in the face of a different ACC threat would be a huge morale win for the Nittany Lions.
