Penn State football fell out of the AP Top 25 Poll after giving up a 17-point lead to Wisconsin in Week 4, ultimately sustaining its first loss of the 2026 season. Following the loss, head coach Matt Campbell spoke to reporters in his weekly Tuesday press conference and gave them a very Iowa State-esque answer as to what his message was to the team.

He told media that it's not about wins and losses, but that it's about figuring out who the Nittany Lions are along the way. It all sounds very cushion-y for a head coach who was hired to win, and it is. Penn State needs the record to reflect the efforts. Results were ultimately what got James Franklin fired midseason. The identity and culture building phase for the blue and white was the offseason. The season is the time to claim wins — and not moral wins.

Every week Campbell has an opportunity to prove he can win, and Friday is no different.

Northwestern has been considered a trap game for the Nittany Lions since the preseason. Week 4 was proof that anything can happen on Saturdays, so this time around, it's Penn State's time to prove that it won't get stuck in the Wildcats' trap.

The Nittany Lions have all the pieces they need, realistically. They have the most experienced quarterback in the nation at the NCAA level, a surplus of offensive weapons in the pass and run game, and a loaded defense that can shut teams out for quite a long time.

The in-game consistency and in-game identity are two areas that need fixing aside from the gritty details that should have been sorted out in practice leading up to Friday.

Defensively, Penn State gave up 24 points after holding the Badgers to zero for a majority of the first half. They got their first score under the two-minute warning before halftime and proceeded to score 17 more points on the Nittany Lions in the second half. Games in the Big Ten won't be won exclusively by the defense, but Penn State has to respond accordingly out of halftime knowing its opponent will put a little extra pressure on creating a better rhythm on offense.

Offensively, the Nittany Lions need a huge boost after Week 4. Campbell's identity message to the team has to yield results on this side of the ball in particular. Rocco Becht was 12-of-29 for 114 yards, zero touchdown passes, and one interception, running back James Peoples led the run game with just 67 yards on the ground, and wide receiver Chase Sowell led pass catchers with 70 receiving yards. There was zero flow to Penn State's offense.

If the defense and offense have developed a stronger identity and brotherhood, as Campbell apparently emphasized to the locker room, the only way to prove things are going in the right direction is having better results. Winning results at that.

Can Penn State overcome the supposed trap game of the 2026 season? Can his team bounce back from a loss? Can Campbell prove that his message goes beyond words? Friday will answer all of those.
