Penn State didn’t schedule a particularly challenging non-conference slate for the 2026 season, but it did give itself a road trip, heading to Temple. The crowd in Philadelphia, though, isn’t likely to be particularly hostile towards the in-state Nittany Lions as they revive their rivalry with the Temple Owls in Week 2.
Penn State looked nearly perfect in Matt Campbell’s debut at Beaver Stadium on Saturday, cruising to a 45-0 win over Marshall. Now, Campbell will have to handle his first road trip against a program that tripped up James Franklin in 2015, his second season at the helm in Happy Valley.
The Owls are on their fourth different head coach since Matt Rhule pulled off that upset of the Nittany Lions over a decade ago, and they’re off to a 1-0 start in the second season under K.C. Keeler. Keeler led Temple to a 5-7 record in 2025 and a 38-14 win over Rhode Island last week.
Now, Keeler will get a real test with the No. 16 team in the country coming to town. A trip out to Philly can be something of a recruiting exercise for the Penn State program, but Campbell still needs to win the football game on Saturday. And here’s what you need to know heading into the Noon ET kickoff.
