Former Penn State quarterback Drew Allar has his downfalls when it comes to game day and consistency, but with the lack of strong draft prospects in the quarterback room, Allar remains as one of the better options come April.
Latest 4-round mock draft leaves 1, big-name Nittany Lion in the dust
The New York Jets are particularly interested in the former Nittany Lion. They hosted Allar with a bunch of his teammates in private workouts on Friday, March 20.
"The big name there was [Allar]," Connor Hughes of SNYtv said on Jets Final Drive of all the Penn Staters who attended New York's private workouts. "Among the reasons why the Jets chose to bring everyone with [Allar], like a bunch of other Penn State people if when they put him through a workout, he was throwing to his guys. So, you got a chance to see him work with his receivers, his tight ends, some of his backs, which is a big thing.
"Was told they came away pretty impressed. He's a big dude, strong arm, great build, a lot of attributes there that you love. There's just some of the mental game that you need to pick up there."

The upsides of Allar have been the same basically since he came to Happy Valley. The prototypical quarterback build works greatly to his advantage, but when it comes to big moments and in-game action, Allar can crumble at any moment.
The mental side that Hughes discussed on the show is key, and it brings up the question of if the Jets have the right coaches to boost Allar's overall game. It's not just nitpicking footwork or other physical elements of his game.
In addition to that, seeing Allar throw to his teammates is definitely a benefit for both parties, but it also raises some questions. There's chemistry-building that needs to happen no matter where Penn State's players end up, not just Allar exclusively. Seeing a small sample size of Allar's ability boxed in by his Nittany Lion ties and connections will always make him look his best.
Whether it's with new pass catchers or simply in a big game, the Jets won't always get Allar's best and they need to be prepared to develop him into the quarterback they need.
