Sophomore cornerback Daryus Dixson had his first career interception in Penn State’s Week 4 loss to Wisconsin and played a season-high 46 snaps. Apparently, he did it after getting “dinged up” in the first half, according to Matt Campbell’s comments on Wednesday.
Dixson didn’t leave the game or show noticeable signs of an injury, so it was a surprise when his name appeared on Penn State’s availability report on Tuesday, released a day earlier than usual, with the Nittany Lions preparing for a Friday night game at Northwestern. Dixson was listed as questionable, and naturally, Campbell was questioned about his status.
“I thought he did a really good job,” Campbell said of Dixson playing through the pain of the injury, which Campbell said he suffered at the end of the first half. “Then he was really, really sore, banged up here early in the week. So, I think we’ll kind of see where he’s at. He was on the practice field today.”

The fact that Dixson practiced on Wednesday is a good sign for his availability on Friday night, but it doesn’t appear that he’s guaranteed to suit up, and that could be a problem against Northwestern quarterback Aidan Chiles, who looks resurgent in Chip Kelly’s offense and ranks No. 2 in the country in passing success rate and No. 15 in yards/dropback.
Penn State is pretty thin at outside corner if Daryus Dixson is limited
Dixson and Audavion Collins have proven themselves to be a solid duo at outside cornerback. However, the depth behind them is questionable, as it is at most positions on a roster that is far from a finished product in Year 1 under Campbell.
Behind Collins and Dixson, Jahmir Joseph, who, like Dixson, was a 2025 four-star recruit, has played the most snaps at outside cornerback. Ibn McDaniels and Zion Tracy, who projected as slot cornerbacks in the preseason, are next up on the depth chart.
Defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn has experimented with Tracy on the outside after he played primarily as the nickel in 2024, then transitioned to a hybrid safety in Jim Knowles’ three-safety scheme last year. Most of those trials, however, occurred during Penn State’s glorified three-game preseason. Tracy played just four snaps outside in Week 4 against Wisconsin and was ahead of true freshman Josiah Zayas as the primary nickel.
Lynn was smart to give himself that option with Tracy outside and Zayas in the slot because he may need to go to it at some point this offseason, but Tracy is much better on the inside, and Zayas is best as a downhill run defender at this point in his career.
The good news is that Penn State may not need to play as many defensive backs against Northwestern, which has morphed into a heavy personnel team under Kelly, even running triple-option out of wing T sets, which kept Indiana off-balance in Week 4. The bad news is that stopping that type of offense requires excellent tackling from defensive backs, which could be an issue if Dixson is banged up.
Campbell hasn’t provided any specifics about his injury, but if he’s unwilling to get his hands dirty in the run game in Week 5, Kelly is a good enough play-caller to recognize that early and hit that pressure point often.
It sounds as though Dixson is trending positively, but on a short week, Penn State will need to have a plan in place without him, even if it affects multiple positions with Tracy sliding outside and Zayas playing more at the nickel.
