Matt Campbell is undergoing a fairly significant defensive transformation as the head coach of Penn State, leaving behind the 3-3-5 defensive structure that he and longtime defensive coordinator Jon Heacock helped spread through college football for a more traditional four-down front with new DC D’Anton Lynn.
With that transition, Campbell needs a different type of player on the defensive line, and especially at defensive end. Yet, it’s one of the DEs who followed him from that 3-3-5 structure in Ames who is standing out in spring practice.
At Campbell’s Tuesday media availability, he gave redshirt senior Ikenna Ezeogu a ringing endorsement when highlighting the players standing out on the edge.
“Ike’s a guy that you talk about has flashed maybe every single day so far.”

Campbell wasn’t shy to bring up players like Yvan Kemojou, who worked his way into playing time as a true freshman for James Franklin and eventually Terry Smith last year, and Max Granville, who missed the entire 2025 season with an injury. He even brought up freshman Jackson Ford for the second time this spring. However, nobody got the type of glowing review Ezeogu received from Campbell.
A 2022 three-star from Blue Spring, Montana, Ezeogu started 12 games over his four seasons at Iowa State. A physical specimen at 6-foot-5, 275 pounds, he has inside-out versatility along the defensive line.
Last season, Ezeogu split his 566 snaps fairly evenly between the edge, lining up over the tackle, and lining up inside. While he failed to register a sack, he finished with 14 pressures, the fourth most on the team.
Coming from a defense that wants oversized defensive ends who two-gap and play the run in a three-down defensive front, this will be the first time Ezeogu is unleashed as a pass rusher, and the early returns, at least judging from Campbell’s comments, have been positive.
"We asked Ike to play as a three-technique and a 4i at some times and to have him on the edge, it's almost probably played to what his strengths are," Campbell responded to a follow-up about his longtime defensive end.
Though the Nittany Lions don’t have much experience on the edge, they will have a deep rotation between Ezeogu, Kemajou, Granville, and Alexander McPherson, a Colorado transfer with starting experience. All four will play a role, but the pecking order will be determined in the spring and summer. So far, it sounds as though Ezeogu has the upper hand.
