Week 1 is here, which means No. 18 Penn State football is back in action this upcoming weekend. Head coach Matt Campbell is ready to kickoff the season with a huge fan welcoming in the Stripe Out as the Nittany Lions host Marshall for their home- and season-opener.
This is the first time the Thundering Herd faces Penn State since 1930. The Nittany Lions holds a 2-0 lead in this series, and Marshall head coach Tony Gibson expects them to extend it to 3-0 after Saturday's contest.
Per Greg Pickell of Blue White Illustrated, Gibson's preparation for this weekend doesn't seem to be about how to win, but more so how to make the loss less brutal.
"We have to make sure we're taking care of the football and try to move the sticks ... and just try to eat some clock up and don't give up explosives on the defensive side of the ball," he told media on Monday.
Limiting the Nittany Lions is the goal in this contest for the Thundering Herd. If Marshall can put some good things on tape, that'll be a success for Gibson.

Marshall points on financial differences that give Power Four schools a huge roster advantage
While it's a new Penn State team in Happy Valley with a new coach and staff, it's not crazy to assume that the Nittany Lions will still dominate in this Week 1 game.
Marshall finished fifth in the Sun Belt's East Division in 2025 with a 5-7 overall record (3-5 Sun Belt). This included non-conference losses to the SEC's Georgia (45-7) and Conference USA's Missouri State (21-20). The blue and white went 3-0 to start their 2025 season with wins over the Mountain West's Nevada (46-11), Conference USA's Florida International (34-0), and FCS' Villanova (52-6).
Though he didn't say it outright, Gibson's expectations to lose vs. Penn State come with some reasoning as well.
"You start comparing rosters financially, it's apples to oranges," Gibson told reporters, per Pickell.
The Nittany Lions' estimated 2026 roster spending came out to $26.6 million, according to Nebraska Cornhuskers On SI, which is the sixth-most in the Big Ten.
While non-Power Four conference NIL collective and roster payrolls are not publicly disclosed, the Board of Governors approved a $39,090,085 budget for all Marshall athletics. With that being spread across all sports, it doesn't take a genius to understand that Penn State is at a huge financial advantage in comparison to what the Thundering Herd's football team is working with.
NIL continues creating disparity, especially in college football, and it's very noticeable when comparing Power Four conferences (SEC, Big Ten, Big 12, and ACC) to the Group of Five conferences (Sun Belt, MAC, CUSA, AAC, and Mountain West). The non-conference slate is a tough time for these G5 schools, and it's a reality that a lot of head coaches have accepted. Gibson is one of them, though he's not waving the white flag completely before Saturday.
