Penn State football found its 2028 quarterback.
James Armstrong already made it clear in a recent interview that he was loyal to the Nittany Lions no matter what else happens with other schools in his recruitment, which is huge for head coach Matt Campbell in the NIL era. Making things even better, Armstrong doubled down on that idea and said he doesn't view this as Penn State keeping him, but rather him proving to the blue and white that he still deserves that spot.
Dedication from recruits is critical, and Campbell picked the right quarterback in this cycle.
Armstrong's perspective on his recruitment is already great for the Nittany Lions, but making things even better is how he plans on tackling game days.
"I'm not playing for videos or I'm not playing for clips. I'm playing to win," Armstrong told Thomas Frank Carr of Blue White Illustrated. "If I have to win by running five people over and scoring five touchdowns on the ground, then I will. If I have to win by throwing the ball in the air, then I will. And then if I have to go to a camp and show the people I can throw and have to show people I can move, then I'll do that too.
"I just think the game time is solely just for winning."

Penn State 2028 quarterback James Armstrong wants to win no matter what it takes
Armstrong's mentality is exactly what Campbell wants in his future quarterback. The new head coach already made it clear that he wanted Armstrong to lead Penn State in the future.
After senior Rocco Becht moves on from the NCAA, Campbell is left with Alex Manske, Kase Evans, Peyton Falzone, and three-star 2027 recruit Will Woods. It's not a particularly deep group, especially having not seen either four in action. Manske missed the spring due to injury recovery, though Becht is confident he will be fine stepping up next season as the Nittany Lions' No. 1. Evans and Falzone are both true freshman, and one will likely enter the Transfer Portal after the 2026 season depending on what direction Campbell sees the quarterback room going.
Though Campbell landed a 2027 quarterback, it doesn't feel like there's a ton of confidence in Woods to be a true starter in the future for Penn State. Armstrong won't walk in as the Nittany Lions' automatic starter, but there's a lot of questions about the other young talent that's currently in that room. Even Manske holding down that starting spot isn't a guarantee until we see him in action on a Saturday.
Regardless, uncertainty won't plague Campbell's quarterback room for long. Considering how Armstrong has been since his commitment, Penn State should feel confident that its 2028 quarterback coming in will fit in just fine into the culture and work ethic.
