Penn State women’s volleyball knocked off Nebraska in four sets at Rec Hall to win the Big Ten title in their regular season finale on November, 29 the program’s first conference crown since 2017. Then, nearly a month later, the Nittany Lions met the Cornhuskers again. This time in the NCAA Tournament semifinals in Louisville, Katie Schumacher-Cawley’s team needed one extra set to advance.
The Nittany Lions fell behind 2-0 before rallying to win Set 3. Then, in set four, they faced a 22-16 deficit and fought off two match points to claim the set 28-26. Penn State closed out the reverse sweep to advance to the NCAA Tournament final against the Louisville Cardinals.
Before Penn State advanced to the final, the Cardinals knocked off No. 1 overall seed Pittsburgh in the first semifinal, in front of a home crowd in the KFC Yum! Center. Pitt handed Penn State one of its two losses this season, and the Nittany Lions won’t have a chance to avenge it for a national title, but with a national championship on the line, they won’t mind.
Penn State has not won a women’s volleyball national title since going back-to-back in 2013 and 2014. Still, in just her third season leading the Nittany Lions, Schumacher-Cawley already has championship experience. The former All-American was a member of the 1999 Penn State national championship team.
