Virginia Tech lost to Old Dominion on Saturday gave the Hokies no choice but to fire its head coach, Brent Pry. The 0-3 start was followed by an announcement on Sunday from Virginia Tech's president Tim Sands.
"Unfortunately, the results on the field were not acceptable and a change in leadership is necessary," Sands said in the released statement. "Philip Montgomery will serve as interim head coach. We will continue to fully support our team and student-athletes for the remaining games as we strive together to significantly improve the trajectory of our football program this season."
Pry started his time at Virginia Tech going 16-21 over three years, but his leadership lacked and it wasn't enough to keep him around after a three-game loss streak.
The Hokies lost by double-digit points to all three of their 2025 opponents so far. In Week 1, South Carolina beat them 24-11. Vanderbilt was their second loss, falling 44-20, and the 45-26 loss to Old Dominion was the final straw.
Pry started his role as head coach for the Hokies following his time as Penn State's linebackers coach (2014-15) and defensive coordinator (2016-21). He started with the Nittany Lions when head coach James Franklin first got to Happy Valley. Pry helped turn them into a Big Ten Championship-winning program with Franklin and made four bowl appearances with the blue and white.
The overwhelming support and praise from former Penn State players influenced the decision to higher him as head coach at Virginia Tech. In 2024 November, though, talks of the hot seat erupted in regards to Pry's job. A loss to Virginia at the end of last season may have seen him on his way out, but he extended his stay and had another chance after finishing 6-6.
In 2025, two new coordinators entered the picture as well: Montgomery, now interim head coach, and Sam Siefkes. Now with Pry's position open, there's talk of who will take his place now in the midst of the season entering Week 4. Virginia Tech plays Wofford at home on Sept. 20 with kickoff slated for 12 p.m. ET.
