No. 18 Penn State football quarterback Rocco Becht extended his winning record as a starter to 27 after a dominant performance vs. Marshall in Week 1 of the 2026 college football season.
It doesn't seem like Becht will give up his record as the most winningest active quarterback in the FBS anytime soon after Saturday, and that's only considering just over two quarters of play on tape. Head coach Matt Campbell put in backup Alex Manske and eventually third-string Connor Barry after the Nittany Lions' first possession of the second half.
The game wouldn't have turned out as it had if it weren't for all three phases of the game, especially Penn State's defense that just completely swallowed up the Thundering Herd's offense every time they stepped out on the field. However, Becht looked like the talent and leader the Nittany Lions need to start this new era.

Rocco Becht quarterback grade for Week 1 win over Marshall: A
Becht was 13-of-18 for 271 yards and four touchdowns, averaging 15.1 yards per pass and not turning the ball over once. He finished with a 72.2 completion percentage and 272.0 quartering rating.
It was a very clean game of football for a lot of Penn Staters, and Becht, especially, looked composed out there. He got the ball out quick, was accurate, didn't hesitate, and trusted his guys. Leadership doesn't always impact a quarterback's grade, but when it allows pass catchers to step out there with confidence and put their trust into their quarterback in return, it matters.
Those four passing scores included a 42-yarder to wide receiver Koby Howard, a 25-yard throw to receiver Brett Eskildsen, an eight-yard completion to tight end Benjamin Brahmer, and a 39-yarder to wideout Zay Robinson. Robinson's touchdown was the finale of Becht's time on the field Saturday.
Spreading the offense around, which also included utilizing the run game when Marshall wasn't clogging it up, is something that really made Becht and the offensive staff stand out. A lot of numbers were called upon in this contest, and Becht made sure to put them all on in tape one way or another, even if the story of the game will be his connection with Howard.
Yes, this stunning performance was against a non-conference team, but Becht proved he can perform at a high level consistently no matter what jersey he has on. Carrying this over into Week 4 will be the first test, but this game vs. Marshall was a perfect warmup for him and his offensive weapons. He made this team with quite a few new faces look like a strong, Top 25-worthy team in just one contest.
