Four-star quarterback flips commitment from Penn State football to Auburn

Penn State football received unfortunate news on Thursday, June 26. Its four-star quarterback commit Peyton Falzone decided to flip his commitment and turn his head over to Auburn. Penn State lost one-of-two quarterback commits from the class of 2026 and also an in-state commit.

Falzone gave his verbal commitment to the Nittany Lions back in April and received an offer from the Tigers on June 2. The class of 2026 recruit is ranked No. 246 overall in the country, No. 18 overall among quarterbacks, and No. 6 out of athletes from Pennsylvania.

Falzone isn't new to flipping his commitment, though. This is the third school in a year that the quarterback has decided to pledge his NCAA career to. Before Penn State, Falzone was committed to Virginia Tech.

Back in June 2024, the young quarterback said that an early verbal commitment to Virginia Tech was "more why not."

However, premature commitments are always shaky to be so certain about. His decision to flip to the Nittany Lions appeared to be more fitting for Falzone. Quarterback trainer Brad Maendler, who worked with the recruit, was told that Falzone had gone to Penn State football games his whole life.

"I was super-excited for him, because I know that's where he wants to go," Maendler said to Penn State Nittany Lions on SI in April when Falzone flipped. ". . . It's close for his family, and obviously they're very tight-knit. He also really believes that [Penn State's] Danny O'Brien is the kind of quarterbacks coach who's going to develop him to be the very best player that he can be. And I happen to agree with that very strongly."

From "why not" to supposedly landing at home, though, Falzone was never locked down. Now head coach James Franklin is left with one quarterback in his class of 2026 and not many high-end recruits are left on the board. This was initially a position Franklin didn't have to worry about. Losing Falzone, though, might change that narrative.

At the moment, the only quarterback that Penn State could maybe land is three-star Semaj Beals, another in-state recruit. However, there aren't any clear cut predictions as to what schools he's leaning towards.

The Nittany Lions still have four-star Troy Hunh, who shouldn't be overlooked in recent news of Falzone's flip. He's the No. 270 recruit overall, No. 20 quarterback, and No. 28 athlete from California. Hunh gave his verbal commitment on June 25, 2024 and has been visiting Penn State's campus exclusively since June 12.

Since Falzone committed in April, though, it seemed that Hunh was in the shadows of the new "up-and-coming" quarterback commit that the Nittany Lions' fans felt they could rely on early in Falzone's NCAA career. Now Hunh has an opportunity show fans that regardless of where Falzone decides to go, Penn State has a solid quarterback who will soon be in Happy Valley.
