Just days after former Penn State quarterback Matt McGloin began his coaching career with former Penn State head coach Bill O’Brien at Boston College, McGloin had a change of heart. McGloin had reportedly resigned from his position on the Lackawanna County Board of Commissioners and joined BC as an offensive analyst.

In conversations with reporters, McGloin cited family reasons for his resignation. “This week I made a difficult and life-changing decision without full awareness of the consequences it would have on my wife and young children,” McGloin said. “My first priority is always my family.”
McGloin, a former walk-on, had the most successful year of his collegiate career under O’Brien in 2012 after the head coach replaced Joe Paterno in Happy Valley. McGloin then left for a lengthy career as an NFL journeyman, making all seven career starts for the then-Oakland Raiders. His NFL career came to an end in 2020.
O’Brien left Penn State after the 2013 season to become the head coach of the Houston Texans. O’Brien led the Texans from 2014 to 2020, then returned to the league as the offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots in 2023, the job he held prior to his two-year stint at Penn State.
O’Brien is no stranger to a last-minute change of heart. Last offseason he was expected to join Ryan Day’s staff in Columbus as Ohio State’s offensive coordinator. Then, once Boston College head coach Jeff Hafley left to become the defensive coordinator of the Green Bay Packers, O’Brien left the Buckeyes to lead the Eagles and become a head coach again.
O’Brien led BC to a 7-6 record in 2024. The Boston College program has not won more than seven games in a season since 2009.
It is not known what McGloin's next step with be or if he will continue to pursue a career in coaching closer to home.
