Big Ten basketball preseason power rankings: Where do the former Pac-12 teams fit in?
By Justin Segal
- Key returning players: Jackson Shelstad, Nate Bittle, Keeshawn Barthelemy, Jadrian Tracey, Kwame Evans
- Key losses: N’Faly Dante, Jermain Couisnard, Kario Oquendo, Brennan Rigsby
- Incoming notable transfers: Supreme Cook, TJ Bamba, Ra’Heim Moss, Brandon Angel
- Incoming top 150 recruits: Jamari Phillips
Oregon, the first of the former Pac-12 teams, enters the power ranking at the fourth spot. The Ducks lost a lot of talent in the offseason, as in star center N’Faly Dante and Jermaine Couisnard, but head coach Dana Altman kept his star in the making, Jackson Shelstad. Shelstad was the facilitator of Altman’s offense, and he helped lead them to a win in the NCAA tournament. Alongside Shelstad, Altman kept fellow starters Kwame Ecans and Jadrian Tracey. The Ducks acquired four players from the transfer portal who all will seemingly play roles for Altman this season. Oregon slides in at the fourth spot just in front of a fellow former Pac-12 team.
- Key returning players: Nimari Burnett, Will Tschetter
- Key losses: Dug McDaniel, Olivier Nkamhoua, Tarris Reed, Terrence Williams
- Incoming notable transfers: Vlad Goldin, Danny Wolf, Roddy Gayle, Tre Donaldson, Sam Walters
- Incoming top 150 recruits: Justin Pippen
To say it was a tumultuous season is likely an understatement for Michigan basketball's 2023-24 campaign. With Juwan Howard out as head coach, Michigan opted to sway Florida Atlantic head coach Dusty May to Ann Arbor. May got to work right away in the transfer portal, taking his star center Vlad Goldin with him. He also landed Danny Wolf, Roddy Gayle, and Tre Donaldson to round out the core of his roster. May certainly has had more success than a lot of current Big Ten coaches, taking Florida Atlantic to consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, and ultimately leading them to the final four in 2023. Even with pivotal losses in Olivier Nkamhoua and Tarris Reed, expect Michigan to finish near the top of the conference.
