Penn State football went emptyhanded on a four-star quarterback recruitment battle for Peter Bourque, but quickly redeemed itself with a commitment from three-star quarterback Will Wood.
Now, head coach Matt Campbell's attention shifts in front of his quarterbacks.
Four-star offensive tackle Layton von Brandt rescheduled his commitment date. He was initially slated to commit on July 1 following his series of official visits.
The Class of 2027 lineman will announce his decision on Monday, May 18, according to Hayes Fawcett of Rivals/On3. His final four includes the Nittany Lions, Auburn, Florida, and Notre Dame, all of which he has official visits scheduled with ahead of his announcement.
The Gators are first on his list with his visit scheduled for May 28. After his visit to Penn State on June 2, von Brandt has the Tigers (June 12) and the Fighting Irish (June 19) remaining.
Per Rivals Industry Ranking, von Brandt is the No. 75 recruit nationally, No. 5 tackle, and No. 1 prospect from Delaware. He's ranked No. 64 nationally, per 247Sports Composite rankings.

The offensive tackle was initially committed to the blue and white before now Virginia Tech head coach James Franklin was fired. He committed back on Nov. 9, 2024 and was committed for 11 months into October 2025. After Franklin's departure, von Brandt decommitted and reopened his recruitment.
Since then, even with Campbell re-extending an offer in December 2025, Notre Dame has taken the lead to land von Brandt. According to Rivals, the Fighting Irish have a 92.3 percent chance to land his commitment.
Despite having four official visits in his calendar, von Brandt's decision to push up his commitment date means he's confident enough to not have to take them before committing. Unfortunately for the Nittany Lions, signs are pointing in favor of Notre Dame and Marcus Freeman.
Three-stars David Tarawallie and Ryan Robbins are the only tackles committed to Penn State with interior offensive linemen Owen Reilly and Jon Sassic joining them in the trenches. As for the Fighting Irish, they have three tackles on their Class of 2027 roster: four-stars Oluwasemilore Olubobola and James Halter, and three-star Jackson Hill.
While von Brandt is projected to commit to Notre Dame, the lack of four-star talent in Campbell's Class of 2027 and, specifically, four-star offensive tackles might be the Nittany Lions' final push for von Brandt's commitment. Both Olubobola and Halter are Notre Dame's highest ranked recruits, respectively, in its No. 3 ranked class so far.
However, von Brandt would be competing alongside players eligible to return past 2026, including Brock Riker, Vaea Ikakoula, Koul Koul II, Trevor Buhr, Anthony Donkoh, and Malachi Goodman. The offensive line room is packed with young talent, which can ultimately turn von Brandt away regardless of what the two programs' recruitment classes look like heading into Monday.
