Big Ten QB power rankings thru Week 10 (Drew Allar vs. JJ McCarthy)
By Josh Yourish
Big Ten QB rankings, No. 2: Drew Allar (was 3)
- Passing yards: 1,895
- TD: 20 INT: 1
- Comp: 62.8%
- YPA: 6.6
Finally Drew Allar looks relaxed. Last week I posited the idea that throwing an interception against Indiana was a good thing for him and I think that showed up against Maryland. It was by far his best collegiate game, even with Mike Yurcich sending Beau Pribula on the field in the red zone repeatedly.
Allar completed over 70% of his passes for the first time since the Delaware game at the start of the year and threw for exactly 240 yards for the second straight week. It was his first four touchdown game since facing Iowa and he posted a QBR 96.9, the best of his career. He is third in the conference in QBR and fourth in EPA.
Allar still doesn’t push the ball downfield aggressively, but he’s accurate to all levels with a 75.2% adjusted completion percentage which is second in the Big Ten to JJ McCarthy, and notably averages 6.0 yards per attempt when pressured and 6.6 when blitzed. Against the blitz he has 12 touchdowns to one interception.
He’s still maturing and it’s a process, but I’m seeing positive strides and next season, Allar will be one of the best quarterback in the country. If Penn State fans are lucky, he’ll be as good as McCarthy is right now.
