Big Ten QB power rankings thru Week 10 (Drew Allar vs. JJ McCarthy)
By Josh Yourish
Big Ten QB rankings, No. 5: Kyle McCord (was 4)
- Passing yards: 2,352
- TD: 17 INT: 4
- Comp: 65%
- YPA: 9.2
Between the last time I ranked the Big Ten quarterbacks, McCord’s Buckeyes have been ranked No. 1 by the College Football Playoff committee and beaten Wisconsin and Rutgers. Yet, I’m moving him down in my rankings.
Against Rutgers, McCord threw for 189 yards and three touchdowns on 19 of 26 passing with five receptions and 80 yards going to TreVeyon Henderson catching passes out of the backfield. It was a wildly underwhelming performance after I wrote about McCord as the fatal flaw with this Ohio State team after the first rankings.
Kyle McCord is a perfectly fine quarterback when he has time to make a play. Ultimately, Marvin Harrison Jr. will bail him out, but against pressure, McCord is the worst quarterback in the Big Ten, and that’s saying something. Yes, worse than Deacon Hill. McCord is last in yards per attempt under pressure at 3.7, behind Braedyn Locke at 3.8. The 17 other qualifying quarterbacks are all at 4.3 or higher.
He has the most turnover-worthy plays under pressure with seven and has completed 27.1% of his passes. McCord is a bad quarterback who is routinely bailed out by an incredibly talented cast of skill players. He is what a lot of people thought CJ Stroud was.
