Big Ten QB rankings No. 8: Hudson Card, Purdue

  • 1,617 passing yards
  • 7 TDs 5 interceptions
  • 60.6% completion
  • 6.6 yards per attempt

Hudson Card has come over from Texas and given Purdue some decent quarterback play in his first year with the program. His numbers aren’t as good as they were at Texas in limited play last season when he threw six touchdowns with no picks and averaged 8.6 yards per attempt.

Now, Card is averaging two yards less per dropback and is putting the ball in harm’s way a lot more. It’s really not his fault very often though. Card isn’t getting much help from a Purdue offense that lacks talent on the offensive line and at the skill positions.

Only Luke Altmyer has been pressured more among Big Ten quarterbacks this season. Card has been pressured on 36.6% of his dropbacks and has been forced to scramble 18 times. He’s been sacked 17 times and as a runner, he has an EPA of -10.1 which is by far the worst in the Big Ten.

If he could be protected he’d succeed. Card has a passing EPA of 21.7 which is sixth in the conference, but with the sacks and lack of running success, his total expected points added are in the negatives.

When kept clean Card is completing 67.2% of his passes for 1,209 yards and six touchdowns with three picks. He just needs protection.
