Big Ten QB rankings No. 5: Gavin Wimsatt, Rutgers

  • 1,134 passing yards
  • 7 TDs 4 interceptions
  • 50.3% completion
  • 6.3 yards per attempt

With a 6-2 start to the season, Rutgers celebrated being bowl-eligible, but they might want to set their sights a bit higher. The Scarlett Knights are one of the better teams in the Big Ten this season, they just have the misfortune of sharing a division with Michigan, Ohio State, and Penn State.

Wimsatt is a big reason for Rutgers’ success this year, not just Greg Schiano’s defense. Wimsatt is only completing about half of his passes, but that’s the game plan for this offense. Wimsatt uses his legs, he has run for 362 yards and seven touchdowns this year, and he throws deep.

The junior has an average depth of target of 11.4 which is the highest in the conference. He’s averaging 9.9 yards per attempt on passes over 20 yards downfield with no interceptions and no turnover-worthy plays. He’s only completing 31.8% of those deep shots, but he makes up for it by hitting on 72.3% of his passes within 10 yards of the line of scrimmage.

Wimsatt doesn’t have an NFL skill set, but with his size, athleticism, and willingness to take shots downfield while protecting the ball, he’s become an outstanding college quarterback.
