2024 Penn State QB Commit Ethan Grunkemeyer Shines at the Elite 11 Finals
In the world of recruiting, everything is based on how many stars the player has. Each recruiting site can rank a player differently based on their own evaluation of the player. For example, if a player is a 3-star on 247sports he also can be ranked as a 4-star prospect on On3. 2024 Penn State QB commit Ethan Grunkemeyer is currently a 3-star recruit on both On3 and 247sports, but that all might change very soon.
There are always casual fans that won’t get as excited when Penn State lands a 3-star QB prospect, but Grunkemeyer is proving why the initial ranking when a player commits doesn’t mean they are not one of the best players at that position. Sometimes in the world of college football recruiting we become too obsessed with the number of stars or lack thereof next to a player’s name.
This week in Los Angeles, California the Elite 11 Finals are taking place. This event is a gathering of all of the best quarterback prospects in the 2024 recruiting class. Here they will compete in various drills, and learn college/NFL playbooks, and one player will win the entire competition when it comes to a close this weekend.
Ethan Grunkemeyer was selected to go to the Elite 11 Finals and to put it lightly, he put on an absolute show during the first day of the competition. After watching several highlights it is clear that he has a rocket of an arm and he is extremely accurate in throwing the football.
He had several beautiful throws that were all over social media on Wednesday night. After the first day, On3 crowned him the top performer from day one of the competition. They ranked him above 5-star Alabama commit Julian Sayin, 5-star Georgia commit Dylan Raiola, and several others.

Different sites have different evaluations but it’s clear that Grunkemeyer is playing at a very high level right now. I think this goes to show you that as a fan never judge a player based on the number of stars next to their name. After this competition I’m sure the Penn State QB commit will see an increase in his ranking on recruiting sites. But one thing is clear, the Nittany Lions have found a true diamond in the rough in the 2024 class.
