The 79KG weight class put a temporary halt to the good vibes for Penn State Wrestling fans as Carter Starocci had to forfeit and drop out of the tournament.

Starocci appeared to be injured during his bout with Dieringer on Thursday night. He would finish the match, but didn’t look as explosive as he normally does. Starocci was headed to the consolation bracket and was scheduled to compete in the semis today. However, shortly before the start time, it was announced that the Nittany Lion was medically forfeiting his match.

Because of the forfeit, Starocci does not place at the tournament, a sad ending for the Penn State Wrestling star who steamrolled his way to the semifinals before the injury. But Starocci is young and will surely be back.

The injury and failure to qualify for Final X do make things interesting for the Penn State Wrestling star this season. There have been rumors around the program that the three-time NCAA champion would take an Olympic redshirt year for the 2023-24 season. I have to imagine that the loss has changed those plans and we might see Starocci in the blue singlet this fall, assuming the injury isn’t long-term.
