The season opener for Penn State football will be on September 2nd when the West Virginia Mountaineers come to visit Beaver Stadium. This game probably has the lowest chance of actually being the whiteout. The reason I say that is, typically Penn State wants to build up momentum in their season before the whiteout game. But, imagine that’s how the 2023 kicks off.

These two teams have not met since the 1992 season and Penn State has owned the series. All-time Penn State has 42 wins to 6 losses to West Virginia in program history.

I do enjoy being able to introduce the non-conference opponents to the whiteout and hearing what their thoughts are on the environment itself. But, I think it’s highly unlikely the Nittany Lions will use the first game of the season as their whiteout.

There will be a massive crowd on-hand for this game regardless since Penn State football will officially return for the 2023 season, and West Virginia is not far away. They have a very passionate fan base in their own right, I would imagine a lot of Mountaineer fans will make the trip to State College.

These are the three choices that make the most sense to me for potential whiteout opponents. The other home opponents for 2023 include Delaware, UMass, Indiana, and Rutgers. Either way, it will be a great atmosphere regardless of the opponent, hopefully, we will learn more about the 2023 game themes soon.
