Earlier today, Penn State football offensive tackle Jimmy Christ announced on his Twitter that he will be entering the NCAA transfer portal.

Christ stands 6’7 316 lbs and enters his redshirt junior season in 2023. He has three years of eligibility left due to the additional covid year. Unfortunately, this is something many players need to think about as the years go on. Christ was a projected reserve offensive tackle for the 2023 Penn State football team and has yet to make a serious impact with the Nittany Lions.

He was a former 4-star prospect in the class of 2020. I felt like last season was his opportunity to have some significant playing time when both Caedan Wallace and Olu Fashanu missed time due to injury. Instead, it was true freshman Drew Shelton and redshirt senior Bryce Effner that filled in for the injured linemen.

At the end of the day, you have to do what’s best for you. If your goal is to go to the NFL, you need to be on the field to prove your value to NFL franchises. Christ enters the portal in search of significant playing time, possibly a destination where he can start right away.

He is from Sterling, Virginia so, the obvious destinations are schools that are near his hometown. Then, you have to remember former Penn State football defensive coordinator Brent Pry is the head coach at Virginia Tech, that is a school that would make sense for Christ.

There is always the possibility of the other PSU tie as well which is with former Penn State football offensive coordinator Ricky Rahne at Old Dominion. Those are the two schools that make the most sense to me right now.

Wherever he ends up, I understand the fact that as a player, you have to do what’s best for you. I wish Jimmy the best in his future and I am grateful that he was part of the Penn State community for a few years.
