We are one week away from the 2023 Blue / White game for Penn State football. It’s the beginning of a new season, fans have everything to look forward to, and the expectations are high.   For the first time since the 2019 Blue / White game, there will be a new quarterback leading the Nittany Lions. Ladies and gentlemen, it’s officially the Drew Allar era.

The 6’5 sophomore quarterback from Medina, Ohio is entering uncharted territory for his college career. Now, he is the starting quarterback for the Penn State football team. The biggest thing I think we need to consider is his growth from the Blue / White game last year – to what we will see this upcoming Saturday. Let’s be honest, during his first spring game, he did not have the best performance and made a few mistakes. Many fans walking away from the 2022 Blue / White game probably imagined Allar redshirting last season but, that wasn’t the case.

Allar put the work in, he worked his way up the depth chart passing Christian Veilleux for the backup quarterback position by the time fall camp ended and the 2022 season began. In just a few short months, the game slowed down for him and he was able to prove to the coaching staff that he was capable of backing up Sean Clifford.

He was then thrown into the fire against Purdue in his very first career game. When Clifford left the field, Allar came in and delivered several beautiful passes. The moment didn’t seem to be too big for him and he ended up appearing in 10 games last season.

His true freshman campaign ended with 344 passing yards and 4 touchdown passes, while completing 35 of 60 pass attempts.

Now, it’s his turn to take this program to the next level. His pocket presence, arm strength, accuracy, and size are all traits you’d want to see in a great quarterback. He has the talent around him starting with an outstanding offensive line, unbelievable running backs, wide receivers and tight ends that can make plays happen.

I believe he is more than capable of being a great quarterback at Penn State. I am even more excited to watch him grow during his career as a starter. This young man will make mistakes and Penn State football will lose some games with him at the helm, but how he responds to the adversity will show us what kind of leader Drew Allar is.

The wait is finally over, rejoice Nittany Nation the Drew Allar era is about to begin. Let’s sit back and enjoy this ride together.
